The Power of a Little Girl's Prayer

(This post is written in first person, as if it was written by Keri)

Having family prayer is not always easy, but it is a priority in our home. We gather nightly to pray before bedtime, then give hugs all around. Even our two-year old, Kenley likes to say the prayer. She wants to say the blessing at mealtimes, and is always ready with her arms folded and her eyes closed.

One Family Home Evening before school started, their dad was giving the traditional before-school father’s blessings to the older kids. I always wonder how much our children pick up from prayers, scripture study and Family Home Evenings.

Kenley, or “Meegies”, as we call her, was getting her teddy bears ready for bed, when suddenly she looked up at me and said in her two-year-old accent, “Mommy, fold yours arms!” Her brother walked into the room about that time. “Brother, fold yours arms, too!” she said in an authoritative voice. We all folded our arms, and she put the bear on her lap, set her hands on his head and proceeded to give him a blessing. Such sweet and innocent words of gratitude and pleadings came from her, I knew instantly that what we do in our home is important, and that these children watch and learn from us!

Our children do listen. They do feel the Spirit of our Heavenly Father. I am so thankful that we have decided to be examples to our children and to teach them to pray, to be thankful, and to love God and Jesus Christ. I know Kenley will never know what a great example she was to me that night. She taught me by her simple faith that Heavenly Father loves us, listens to our prayers, and yes, is even aware of our teddy bears.
